Field of Light at a glance

Field of Light is an art installation by the British artist Bruce Munro. It opened in April 2016 and uses about 50,000 solar-powered light stems. On 31 March 2026 the operator confirmed that it will run until at least the end of 2029.

It is a contemporary artwork. It is not an Anangu ceremony and should not be described as one. The installation lies on remote land and can be visited only with a booked ticket, so there is no walk-in entry and no way to drive up on your own.

Getting there and getting around the site

Access is part of the ticket. A bus transfer takes you there and back. For General Admission, the walk from the drop-off to the installation is about 300 m uphill on uneven, sandy paths. The site is not fully accessible for wheelchairs. Strollers are not allowed in the field. Winter nights in the desert can be very cold, so bring warm layers in the cooler months.

Programmes can change with the weather. If you want a different time of day, a Field of Light sunrise tour is sold by tour companies. In 2026 one such tour is listed from AUD 115 for about 2 hours. It includes the entry to the installation, a hot drink at the sunrise viewing point and a coach with a driver-guide. Breakfast is not included.

Combining Field of Light with the rest of your trip

The evening fits well after a day at the park. See sunrise and sunset for the viewing areas by day, and the tours page for options that combine sunset at the rock with an evening in the desert. If you stay in Yulara, the Yulara page explains how to get around. Allow enough time for the walk through the lights.
