Getting to Uluru at a glance

Uluru sits in the middle of Australia, far from any big city. You can fly to Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ), which lies by Yulara, or drive from Alice Springs. Alice Springs is a different arrival point, with its own airport.

This is an independent guide, not an airline, a car rental company or the park authority. Check flights and road conditions before you travel.

The park authority names Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia as airlines serving these routes. These times are rough planning values, not a timetable. Fares, daily frequencies and flight numbers change, so check them for your dates.

The resort lists a free airport transfer for its guests, about 10 to 15 minutes to the resort, and free guest parking. If you stay elsewhere, ask your host. From the airport, the resort is about 10 minutes away.

Distance and time

The park authority gives 465 km by road and about 5.5 hours of direct driving. That figure is for the road to Uluru, not to a specific hotel, and it does not include stops.

Road and car

The route and the park roads are sealed. A normal 2WD car is enough, and four-wheel drive is not required. Rental cars are available at the airport.

Fuel and supplies

Fuel prices and opening hours are not fixed here, so plan your fuel stops in advance and carry water. Mobile coverage cannot be your only safety plan.

From Western Australia

The Great Central Road crosses Aboriginal land. Obtain the required permits from the Central Land Council before you go and show them at the park entry station. The park recommends 4WD for this route.

If you land in the afternoon, you can still catch a sunset the same day. The car sunset viewing area is about 15 to 20 minutes from Yulara, and the park stays open until the closing time for that month. Plan a buffer for baggage and the drive.

The park authority lists no taxis and no other public transport. If you plan to drive, a rental car gives you the most freedom for early starts.
