Uluru sunset and sunrise at a glance

Most visitors plan one sunrise and one sunset. The park has set up five viewing zones for this, and three of them are covered here: Talinguru Nyakunytjaku for sunrise, the car sunset viewing area for the evening, and the Kata Tjuta dune viewing area for a wide view of both Kata Tjuta and Uluru.

Two points shape the plan. The park is closed at night, and you must be out by closing time, and the closing time is after sunset. And the monthly opening hours are not sunrise or sunset times, so look up the times for your date.

Viewing areas compared

Drive times are from Yulara. The park's overview page gives 30 minutes for Talinguru and its detail page gives 35, so plan on the longer figure.

One tour operator's FAQ says there are toilets at every viewing area. The park's own page for the car sunset area says there are none, so bring water and plan a stop before you leave Yulara.

Talinguru Nyakunytjaku

Talinguru Nyakunytjaku is the main sunrise area for Uluru. It has viewing platforms, shelters, drinking water, toilets and wheelchair access. The sun rises behind the platforms and lights up the rock. It is not a view of the sun disc rising directly behind Uluru, so set your expectations to the light on the rock.

Two short walks start here, and both are open to men and women. Minymaku is 1 km and takes about 30 minutes. Watiku is 1.5 km and takes about 45 minutes. Both are described as wheelchair accessible.

Car sunset viewing area

This area is for cars, not for buses. The rock is lit in the evening, and at sunrise it shows as a silhouette. It is the closest of the three areas, 15 to 20 minutes from Yulara. It has no water and no toilets.

Photograph Uluru as a whole. Do not zoom in on sacred details. The park asks for this, and the north-east side of the rock is a sensitive area. Please respect that, and enjoy the evening light on the whole shape.

Kata Tjuta dune viewing

The dune viewing area looks over Kata Tjuta, with Uluru on the horizon. Keep at least five domes in the picture if you photograph them. The park's detail page says the sunlight does not hit the domes head-on at sunrise or sunset here, while its general page describes direct light at the areas. Do not plan around a guaranteed colour.

A simple plan for sunrise and sunset

Leave time for the drive, parking and the walk to the platform.

Sunrise at Talinguru

Leave Yulara early enough to arrive well before the light. It is the area with water, toilets and shelter.

Best time to visit โ†’

Sunset by car

The car sunset area is the nearest, so it suits a late start. Take water, and leave before the park closes.

Getting around โ†’

Without a car

The free resort shuttle does not go to the national park. Use a tour or the paid hop-on hop-off bus. Buses cannot use the car sunset area.

After dark

The Field of Light is a separate evening experience on its own booking. It is not part of the park pass.
