Which Uluru tour suits you

You can see Uluru and Kata Tjuta on your own with a hire car and a park pass. A tour helps when you do not want to drive, when you want a guide on the Base Walk or when you want an evening with drinks at sunset. Most tours start from Yulara with hotel pickup, and some leave from Alice Springs.

Not every item on the market is the same kind of product. The free ranger-guided Mala walk is a short guided walk. The hop-on hop-off bus is transport only. Field of Light is a separate evening experience. Compare the length, the group size and the included items rather than the headline price alone.

Sunrise or sunset at Uluru

Bus tours take you to the viewing areas and handle the timing and the parking. A sunset tour adds snacks and drinks. The park closes at night, so tours are planned around the closing time.

Walking with a guide

A guided base walk or a small-group trek covers part or all of the 10.6 km around the rock. Walks start early because of the heat. Some paths close in hot weather.

Kata Tjuta

The tours here walk the Walpa Gorge or the Valley of the Winds. The Valley of the Winds closes beyond the first lookout from 11:00 when 36 ยฐC is forecast.

Field of Light

The installation can be visited only with a booked ticket or tour. Prices start at AUD 50 for adults.

Hop-on hop-off bus, helicopter and camel rides

The hop-on hop-off bus is a paid transport service with stops at the Mala carpark, the Cultural Centre, Kuniya Piti and the Mutitjulu Waterhole. It is not a guided walk and does not include a park pass. Direct prices are AUD 140 for an adult, AUD 70 for a child and AUD 350 for a family for 1 day. Two days cost AUD 180 and AUD 90, and three days AUD 230 and AUD 115. Book ahead from May to October.

The bus to Kata Tjuta runs a sunrise service to the Walpa Gorge or the Valley of the Winds. The sunset service has no Valley of the Winds option. Check the return time against the heat closure before you choose a long walk.

A helicopter operator at the Town Square helipad offers flights over the park with hotel transfers. It states that its flights do not go directly over Uluru. The page on camel tours covers the one-hour rides at sunrise and sunset. The free resort shuttle in Yulara does not run into the national park, as explained on the Yulara page.

Uluru tours: frequently asked questions

Is the park pass included in an Uluru tour?

In most day tours it is not. The pass costs AUD 38 for adults and you buy it separately. Multi-day camping tours may include the park fees, so read the included items. See the park pass page.

Do I need a tour, or can I visit by myself?

Both work. With a hire car you can reach the viewing areas, the walks and Kata Tjuta on your own. Without a car you need a tour or the paid hop-on hop-off bus, because there are no taxis or public transport in the park.

Which tour is best for sunrise?

A sunrise tour to the viewing area at Talinguru Nyakunytjaku or a guided base walk are the usual choices. A Field of Light sunrise tour is a shorter option of about 2 hours.

How far ahead should I book?

The bus operator recommends booking ahead, especially from May to October. Check availability for your dates before you finalise flights and hotels.

Are there tours from Alice Springs?

Yes. Day trips and multi-day tours start in Alice Springs, 465 km from Uluru. A day trip means a very long day on the road. Multi-day tours are often more relaxed. See getting there.

Is this site a tour operator?

No. This is an independent guide and does not run tours. It is not connected to any operator.
